The Center for Migration Studies at the University of the Republic of San Marino preserves about a hundred original documents, selected and made available to young people abroad who participate in the 2024 Cultural Stay, in which they explore the reality of San Marino by tracing the family members who left the Titanic to emigrate to another country in the last century.
Within the framework of the calendar of the initiative, active since 1981, which lasted three weeks last month, participants attended a course on July 23, where the director of the research center, Patrizia Di Luca, provided an in-depth analysis of the two hours telling the history of migration in San Marino, intertwined with the experiences of the families of the children present: “The academic explains that this work began a few weeks ago, when each boy communicated to us the names of their ancestors who left Titano many decades ago. This allowed us to carry out targeted research in our archives, which gather the files of 11,000 citizens, but also 200 private letters and 1,000 images. Documents such as passport applications and boarding certificates have appeared, in which the characteristics of each person can be read, often accompanied by a photograph.”
A digital version of the selected material was presented during the course, with stories from relatives present in France, the United States, Argentina, Belgium and Italy, enriching the general overview: “When the participants were 20 years old, they first saw photos of their loved ones as young people, during their travels to a foreign country. This had a profound emotional impact on them, which translated into heartfelt engagement and very high interest,” said Di Luca.
After the course, the children visited the Immigration Museum, where the research center’s activities take place. There, they were able to see and touch materials related to each relative: “Some had never handled documents from the 1920s. The sparkle in their eyes reflected the value of such an initiative. They were a great enrichment for the children and for us.”
