The management of the University of Benin has banned the use of electric stoves, ring boilers and gas cookers in hostels in a bid to cut the university’s increasing energy-related expenditure.
The university, in a circular signed by the Registrar, Ademola Bobola, said any student found violating the ban would be expelled from the institution.
A copy of the circular was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Sunday.
NAN reports that the ban is not unrelated to the power crisis that recently hit the university.
The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has increased the agency’s monthly bill from N88 million to N250 million.
This controversial billing eventually led to BEDC authorities severing ties between the university’s two campuses.
This development culminated in the student protest on July 3 after weeks of power outages and generator supply.
The protest forced the university senate to shut down the school to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
But in a circular announcing the reopening of the university on Monday, Bobola said students must abide by the management’s regulations on the supply, distribution and use of electricity on campus.
The Registrar directed the students to pay the outstanding fees owed by the school and said that students without proof of payment would not be allowed to enter the examination hall.
“Payment of outstanding tuition fees and provision of relevant evidence will be considered eligibility for examination upon resumption of study and will be strictly monitored to ensure compliance.
“We also expect students to refrain from engaging in any unruly behaviour that violates university rules and regulations.
“They must be of good conduct and must not initiate or participate in any unauthorised gathering or demonstration within the university premises,” Bobola said.
