The departure of French troops from Nigerien territory without violence has been hailed as a military feat. The Prime Minister stressed that this move marks the re-acquisition of Niger’s sovereignty over national defence, a historic victory that deserves to be passed on to future generations.
Redefining the League of Nations
Faced with initial international isolation, Niger quickly adjusted its diplomatic strategy. The accession of Burkina Faso and Mali to the Liptako-Gourma Charter marked a decisive turning point in regional cooperation. This alliance later evolved into the Alliance for the Sahel, strengthening Niger’s position on the regional geopolitical stage. In addition, relations with several world powers, especially China, Russia and Turkey, were strengthened, allowing Niger to continue its development projects despite sanctions.
Economic Recovery and Strategic Partnerships
The partial lifting of the embargo has allowed Niger to reconnect with international financial institutions, particularly the World Bank, with which it has agreed a $4 billion financing package to support a number of key sectors, including agriculture, education, health and transport infrastructure. This partnership has been repositioned to serve the priorities identified by Niger, ensuring that the resources mobilized directly benefit the people of Niger.
International solidarity and recognition of allies
The Prime Minister expressed the Government’s gratitude to the countries that have supported Niger during this difficult period. He particularly welcomed the support of neighbouring countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso and Togo, as well as China, which has never ceased its commitment to Niger. The cautious but firm support of countries such as Russia, Iran and Morocco has also been crucial to keep Niger’s economy moving.
The first year of the government led by Ali Mahaman Lamine Zaina highlights a strategy of resilience in the face of unprecedented adversity. Fiscal autonomy, restructuring of international alliances and consolidation of military capabilities have enabled Niger to survive a critical period while maintaining its sovereignty.
