With less than 80 days until Election Day, the party hopes to ride on this wave of enthusiasm to victory.
This would make Harris the first Black and Asian American to serve as vice president of the United States and the first female president of the United States.
But pollsters and strategists from both major parties have warned that the “euphoria” of Harris’ initial surge in support will fade, and the Democratic Party will be divided over issues such as the economy and Israel’s war with Hamas, and will face a tough competition with Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Republican pollster Adam Geller predicted that Harris’ personal history “is great, but the issues that will ultimately decide this election are inflation, security, leadership and the world stage.”
Harris delivered her first major speech focused on the economy on Friday with proposals to cut taxes for most Americans, ban grocers from “price gouging” and increase affordable housing, an early nod to the party’s progressive wing.
She will face increasing public pressure in the coming weeks to provide more policy details, and aides say she is unlikely to offer too many specifics in some areas, such as energy, to avoid alienating moderate and progressive factions in her party.
Harris may also have to deal with disputes within the party over U.S. support for Israel’s war against Hamas, as well as divisions between progressives and moderates on a range of policy issues, including energy, health care and immigration.
About 200 social justice organizations planned to march at the Democratic National Convention on Monday to protest the Biden administration’s continued support for Israel’s war that has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza.
