The UN Security Council will vote later on Monday (June 10) on a US-drafted resolution supporting the following proposals: President Biden Overview – Called for a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The United States finalized the text on Sunday after six days of negotiations among the 15-member Security Council. It is unclear whether the vetoes of Russia and China will allow the draft to pass.
A resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and no veto from the United States, France, Britain, China or Russia to pass.
Biden proposed a three-phase ceasefire plan on May 31, which he said was an Israeli initiative. Some Security Council members questioned whether Israel accepted the plan to end the fighting in Gaza.
The draft resolution welcomed the new ceasefire proposal, “which Israel accepted and called on Hamas to do the same, and urged both parties to implement its terms fully and without delay and conditions.”
The statement also details the proposal and specifies that “if the first phase of negotiations lasts longer than six weeks, the ceasefire will continue as long as the negotiations continue.”
Commenting on Monday’s UN Security Council vote, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki told a local radio station on Monday: “So far, there are positive signals. We hope that the proposal will be accepted.”
