The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting on Tuesday after Israel launched a deadly airstrike on a refugee camp near Rafah in the Gaza Strip.
AFP learned from diplomatic circles on Monday that the meeting on the situation in Rafah, requested by Algeria, will be held behind closed doors. Hamas said the airstrike killed 45 people and injured 249.
The Israeli army said it “strikes a Hamas compound in Rafah, where” key Hamas terrorists are operating. Two senior Hamas officials involved in planning attacks in the occupied West Bank were killed in the attack. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the deaths of innocent civilians a “tragic accident” and said the case was being investigated.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres harshly criticized Israel for its devastating attacks on refugee camps in the Gaza Strip. “I condemn Israel’s actions, which have killed numerous innocent civilians seeking protection in this deadly conflict,” Guterres wrote on Platform X on Monday. “There is no safe place for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. This terror must stop,” the UN chief continued.
