Roseau, Dominica (TDN)
– United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today visited the Dominican Republic, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria on 18 September 2017. His visit comes as the country struggles to return to some semblance of normalcy following the brutal hurricane that killed at least 72 people and caused billions of dollars in damage to the country’s economic well-being and infrastructure. Speaking at a press conference in New York before heading to the Caribbean, the Secretary-General noted that some of the most important speeches at the just-concluded UN General Assembly came from leaders of Caribbean countries that were devastated by the back-to-back hurricanes. “The Prime Minister of the Dominican Republic declared that he was coming ‘straight from the front lines of the war on climate change,’” he noted. Guterres also noted that he would be touring the damage, assessing what else the United Nations could do to help people recover, and visiting UN operations on the island. He focused on the role that climate change continues to play, saying “But scientists know clearly that this extreme weather is exactly what their models predict, and they predict that this will be the new normal in a warming world.”
In addition to Dominica, the Secretary-General will also visit Antigua and Barbuda to see first-hand the devastation caused on the island of Barbuda.
