Starmer wrote on the X website that he told the Ukrainian president that if he became the next British prime minister as expected, “Britain’s support for Ukraine will not change.”
Starmer told reporters Sunak “must be held accountable for his actions”, adding: “For me, there is nowhere to go.”
Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said Sunak had “brought disgrace to his office” and had “let our country down”.
‘The Ultimate Sacrifice’
The prime minister’s own veterans’ affairs secretary, former soldier Johnny Mercer, said he understood the “anger” at Sunak’s actions and said his boss had made a “major mistake”.
Conservative leader Rishi Sunak said in the post that the anniversary “should honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country”.
“The last thing I want is for the commemoration to be overshadowed by politics,” he wrote.
“I care deeply about veterans and have been honoured to represent the UK at a number of events in Portsmouth and France over the past two days and to meet those soldiers who have fought so bravely.”
Sunak, 44, returned home for an interview with ITV News that will be broadcast on Wednesday.
In a video released late Thursday, he was forced to deny that he was willing to lie to remain in power.
Labour accused him of lying, repeating a claim questioned by independent experts that Starmer would raise taxes by 2,000 pounds ($2,600) per household over four years.
The D-Day landings mark the 80th anniversary of Operation Overlord, when tens of thousands of Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy in northern France on June 6, 1944.
This massive military operation paved the way for the liberation of occupied France and the end of the war against Nazi Germany.
Commentators said Sunak’s decision not to attend the main ceremony to pay tribute to the soldiers showed he lacked political acumen.
“This is a very important moment for the country,” Cameron’s former adviser Craig Oliver told BBC radio. “But it’s also an important moment for the prime minister.”
Sunak, the Conservative Party appointee to become prime minister in October 2022, announced the election in a speech in heavy rain at Downing Street on May 22.
He has since visited the site where the Titanic was built in Belfast, comparing his leadership to being the captain of a sinking ship.
Sunak was also mocked for asking the Welsh public whether they were looking forward to the European Football Championships, as Wales have not yet qualified for the tournament.
Labour finalised its manifesto on Friday, with Starmer confirming it will include recognition of Palestinian statehood as part of the Middle East peace process.
