WASHINGTON: A federal judge ruled on Monday that Alphabet’s Google broke the law by cementing its dominance in online search and related advertising, handing the U.S. Justice Department its first antitrust victory in more than two decades.
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta’s ruling on Alphabet’s main revenue source paves the way for a second trial to determine possible solutions, such as requiring the company to stop paying billions of dollars a year to smartphone makers to set Google as the default search engine on new phones.
The ruling is the first major decision in a series of cases against big tech companies over their alleged monopoly.
