Tokyo: A 6.9-magnitude earthquake followed by a 7.1-magnitude tremor struck southern Japan on Thursday (August 8), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.
Tsunamis as high as one meter are expected to reach or have already reached parts of the coast of Kyushu and Shikoku, NHK reported. Waves as high as 20 centimeters have been observed in Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu, NHK reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the first earthquake had a focal depth of 33 kilometers, followed by a second earthquake nearby at a depth of 25 kilometers.
The Japanese government has set up a special task force to respond to the earthquake, a statement said.
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters that no reports of abnormalities at the nuclear power plant had been received since the earthquake, and the government was examining the losses and casualties.
