Based on the clues discovered, the Singapore police identified two men who were believed to be part of the syndicate carrying out the malware scam and traced them to Malaysia.
“With the strong cooperation and assistance of the Royal Malaysian Mounted Police, the two men were arrested in Malaysia on June 12, 2024, pursuant to arrest warrants issued by the National Court of Singapore,” the SPF said.
The two were handed over to the Singapore police on Friday.
The two men will appear in court on Saturday to be charged with unauthorised modification of computer data, an offence punishable by a fine of up to S$50,000, jail of up to seven years, or both.
The 47-year-old man was also charged with obtaining benefits by criminal conduct. If convicted, he faces a fine of up to S$500,000, up to 10 years’ jail, or both.
The SPF said both men will be remanded in custody for further investigation.
Taiwan and Hong Kong face economic recession
The SPF said it also shared information with Taiwanese police during its investigation and successfully dismantled a criminal group operating a fraudulent customer service center in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
On May 15, Taiwanese police conducted a raid and arrested four suspects who were suspected of using malicious applications to make unauthorized transfers from victims’ bank accounts.
The total value of the arrested persons’ assets, including cryptocurrencies and real estate, is approximately $1.33 million.
In addition, Hong Kong police also destroyed 52 servers in Hong Kong that controlled malware and arrested 14 “money mules” who were suspected of facilitating fraud cases using malware by giving scammers access to their bank accounts in exchange for monetary rewards.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Paul Tay, deputy director of the Criminal Investigation Department, expressed his gratitude to all law enforcement officers and other stakeholders involved in the operation.
“The arrests of these malware operators and the dismantling of the scam infrastructure demonstrate the Singapore Police Force’s resolve in combating scams. We are grateful for the strong partnership of our counterparts in Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, which enabled us to thwart this criminal operation and prevent victims from further harm,” he said.
“The SPF would also like to thank the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore for its support. The SPF will relentlessly pursue criminals, even those operating outside of Singapore, and we will continue to work with foreign law enforcement partners to bring these criminals to justice.”
