Two Kenyans are facing charges for allegedly threatening to kill Finance Minister Professor Njuguna Ndung’u and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah following the passage of the 2024/2025 Finance Bill.

Stephen Mwangi Kamau and Kelvin Wafula Bwire appeared before Milimani Magistrate Rose Ndubi.

Bwire allegedly sent an unwarranted message on June 20 using his WhatsApp account @advokezadbiadboy, saying “Wee Mzee, your time is up, you should die!” To CS Ndung’u.

Kamau is also separately accused of sending a threatening message to Ichung’wah on June 20, which read: “I swear, if this bill passes, I will stage an accident and you will not survive.”

In addition, the two accused also face four other charges involving the use of derogatory and insulting language against Ijongwa and President William Ruto.

They pleaded not guilty to charges of sending threatening messages to politicians through their personal WhatsApp accounts.

In seeking bail, the defense attorney argued that “The suspects were arrested during protests against the passage of the 2024/2025 Finance Bill. The entire country is strongly opposed to this bill.”

The court heard that Kamau worked as a cook at a hotel in Nakuru, earning 6,500 Kenyan shillings a month and could not afford the high bail.

However, the prosecutor requested the court to set a high bail considering the severity of the threat to the politician’s life.

The magistrate noted that as Kamau had predicted, the CDF office in Ichungwa constituency was set on fire.

Ms Ndubi rejected the prosecution’s ruling and agreed to bail for both suspects on a cash bail of Ksh100,000 each or a surety of Ksh300,000, saying both suspects were persons of average means.

A pre-bail report will be filed in the matter on July 2.
