Uganda is supporting the Movement of 23 (M23) rebels fighting across the border in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UN experts say, warning that the rapidly escalating crisis “has the potential to spark a wider regional conflict”.
The well-armed M23 movement is often accused of being a proxy for Rwanda, but evidence provided by UN experts suggests it is also supported by Uganda.
Uganda has denied the allegations in the UN report, which also accuses Rwanda of deploying up to 4,000 troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo to fight alongside rebels.
In response, Rwanda did not deny the allegation, telling the BBC that the DRC government lacked the political will to resolve the crisis in its mineral-rich eastern region, which has suffered decades of instability. “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”
