WASHINGTON: Donald Trump’s campaign said on Saturday its network had been hacked and blamed “foreign sources” for distributing internal communications and a dossier on campaign aide JD Vance.
The Trump campaign suggested Iran was behind the operation, with news outlet Politico reporting that it had received emails containing campaign material from a source it declined to identify.
“These documents were illegally obtained from foreign sources hostile to the United States in an effort to interfere in the 2024 election and sow chaos in our democratic process,” Trump campaign spokesman Siping Chang said in a statement.
Mr. Zhang cited a report from Microsoft this week that said Iranian hackers “sent a spear-phishing email to a senior official in the presidential campaign in June.”
The materials Politico received included a review of Vance, Trump’s vice presidential pick.
In 2016, a hack of Democratic National Committee emails — allegedly by Russia — leaked internal party communications, including information about candidate Hillary Clinton.
Trump later won the election, but he was criticized for encouraging the hacking attacks.
