On Thursday, Surinamese police arrested Aloy T., 40, of Trinidad, and Ambrosius P., 39, of Guyana, for “skimming,” a form of fraud in which criminals copy payment card details.
It is learnt that a report of embezzlement and theft was received by the Latur police on Thursday, July 25. The complainant found very little money in the account.
She then asked Hakrinbank for a printout and found that 10,000 SRD had been withdrawn from the ATM at Verlengde Gemenelandsweg and 28,000 SRD had been paid out to each POS device at Digital World.
Suspect T. was identified by the Surinamese police and arrested along with suspect Ambrosius. Investigations revealed that the suspect should have known more about this high-profile bank debit card fraud case.
Police seized 94 counterfeit debit cards from the suspect’s car. The case will be handed over to the anti-fraud department for further processing.
Skim It is usually done through an inconspicuous device that is attached to an ATM or payment terminal. When a card is inserted, the device reads and steals data from the card’s magnetic stripe. The stolen data is then used to create counterfeit debit cards that criminals can use to withdraw funds from victims’ bank accounts.
