According to Russian opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza, he was certain he would die in prison and could not believe he was free. He spoke on the phone with his family on a plane after being released from prison.

“I was sure that I was going to die in prison. I can’t believe that this is happening. I think I was still sleeping in my cell in Omsk and I didn’t hear your voice. But, I want to say that you did it. I think there were 16 people on that plane and it was a great job and I can’t believe that this is happening, so I want to say that in my opinion, nothing is more important than saving people’s lives. ” – said Karamurza.

On August 2, the White House released a video of a phone conversation between President Joe Biden and his family as part of the U.S.-Russia prisoner swap deal. In the video, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan and Kara-Murza, who were on the plane, can be heard talking.

Vladimir Kara-Murza was sentenced to 25 years in prison for treason and false information in April 2023. He denied the charges and compared the court to trials during Stalin’s time.
