Difficulties in registering for VEP
To obtain a VEP, drivers must first register online and then receive a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag that must be affixed to the vehicle.
However, many have reported difficulties with the process, with some Singaporean drivers telling CNA that they were unable to register their cars or renew their existing licences.
There are also cases where used car drivers have vehicles that have already had VEPs registered under the previous owner’s name. Others are experiencing problems renewing their existing VEPs.
Loke admitted that his ministry was aware of the difficulties applicants faced in registering for the VEP.
The ministry’s land division and road transport division have been directed to look into and streamline the process.
“Once we have rectified these issues, we will make an announcement,” he said, adding that he would personally look into the matter and would travel to Johor to inspect it.
“We will have some announcements about improvements coming soon.”
Loke had previously said that about 70,000 vehicles registered in Singapore have activated VEP tags.
More than 200,000 vehicles have been registered but have not yet completed the process of installing and activating the VEP tags.
