Van Gils’ Lotto-Dstny team announced today that the driver had tested positive and was showing mild signs of illness.

Before him, Dane Michael Moerkoev, Briton Thomas Pidcock and Spaniard Juan Ayuso, who was part of leader Tadej Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates, resigned due to covid-19.

DPA adds that some cyclists continued riding despite testing positive, so Geraint Thomas also tested positive but did not quit because of barely perceptible symptoms.

Testing is not mandatory at this year’s Tour de France, and Mark Cavendish, who recently took a record stage win, told ARD television he knew of several competitors who had continued to compete despite positive tests.

Due to a number of infections, race management on Sunday introduced the use of protective masks in certain areas, such as the press areas at the start and finish, and on the team buses.

Race leader and Slovenian great Tadej Pogačar also addressed these issues. During a press conference on Monday, when competitors had a day off, he stressed that the increase in covid-19 in the team had him a little worried, but he hoped that he would be able to participate in another six stages healthy and get on the podium in Nice.
