Van Gils’ Lotto-Dstny team announced today that the driver had tested positive and was showing mild signs of illness.
Before him, Dane Michael Moerkoev, Briton Thomas Pidcock and Spaniard Juan Ayuso, who was part of leader Tadej Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates, resigned due to covid-19.
DPA adds that some cyclists continued riding despite testing positive, so Geraint Thomas also tested positive but did not quit because of barely perceptible symptoms.
Testing is not mandatory at this year’s Tour de France, and Mark Cavendish, who recently took a record stage win, told ARD television he knew of several competitors who had continued to compete despite positive tests.
