Apia, 30 August 2024 – As Samoa prepares to host and participate in the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), the ‘Torch of Change’ as part of the conference was launched last week by Deputy Prime Minister Tuala Iosefo Ponifasio.

Led by young people from the Samoan Victims Support Group, the Torch will travel to all 56 Commonwealth countries, delivering messages of change and inclusion, while rallying communities to combat domestic violence against women and children and advocate for equality for all.

The Torch for Change also highlights Samoa’s willingness to showcase its progress towards inclusion and gender equality.

Samoa remains at the forefront of inclusive development in the Pacific, with Cabinet approving 20 per cent of the regional development fund for initiatives such as gender equality and social inclusion.

Launching the torch, Tuala said he hoped the torch journey would inspire young people and become agents of change who would be moved by the message of hope it carries. He said the torch would return to Apia in October for the official opening of the Commonwealth Youth Leaders Conference and its underlying message would be highlighted at the Commonwealth Youth Forum, part of the conference.

Samoa’s Youth Minister, Mulipola Anarosa Molioo, will lead a Samoan delegation to Fiji to attend the Commonwealth Youth Ministers’ Meeting starting on September 2, after ministers were invited to attend the Commonwealth Youth Forum.
