Pago Pago, American Samoa— Three of American Samoa’s top junior tennis players competed in the 2024 Australian Junior Team Championships, which began yesterday on Australia’s Gold Coast.
They are Hermann Thomsen, Aifili Tamasoaali’i and Joelei Ioane.
American Samoa Under-12 national team member Hermann Thomsen will compete in the Under-11 (11/u) category, while Aifili Tamasoaali’i will compete in the Under-15 (15/u) category and Joelei Ioane, who is making his second appearance at the annual tournament, will compete in the Under-13 (13/u) category. Both are in the American Samoa Under-14 category.
The three local players will compete in the Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 age groups alongside more than 160 junior tennis players from every state and territory in Australia, the Pacific and New Zealand.
The Pacific team is composed of young tennis players from various Pacific island countries and regions, with each team consisting of three people.
Joelei Ioane, accompanied by her parents Joseph and Leuila Ioane, arrived in Australia on June 16 to take part in a three-day pre-tournament camp for Pacific players. The camp was held in partnership with the Australian Government’s Pacific Australia Sport Program to support women and girls in tennis in the Pacific region.
The boys arrived on June 19th, in time for the tournament which started the next day (yesterday).
Herman Thomsen’s father Barron was also there to support his son and teammate Aifeli Tamasoali. According to Joseph Ione, the players also received further moral support from relatives living in Melbourne and Brisbane.
The Pacific team will be guided by four coaches from Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.
Coaches and players will benefit from a nine-day mentoring program and they will gain valuable experience to take home.
Tennis Australia’s director of government, social impact and stakeholder relations, Vicky Reid, told Australian media it was fantastic to be able to provide tailored mentoring programs for players and coaches.
“For the first time this year, we will also be hosting a unique symposium at KDV Stadium, where the competition will take place, for Pacific female coaches to engage with Pacific scholars from the Australian Awards Program,” Reid said.
This annual tournament provides a platform for young players to showcase their junior tennis skills while competing for the title.
For three American Samoan teenagers, Joelei Ioane, Aifili Tamasoaali’i and Hermann Thomsen, the Australian Team Championships are an important opportunity early in their careers to gain competition experience and build respect, trust and cooperation.
“These national events not only foster the spirit of competition, but they also greatly enhance camaraderie and support among players and teammates,” said tournament director Francis Sawyer.
“Many of our professional tennis players today have gained experience through this tournament, including top Australian players Alex de Minaur and Jordan Thompson, who are currently preparing for Wimbledon, and former world number one Ash Barty. This really highlights the importance of tournaments like this in developing the next generation of tennis champions.”
The annual Australian Team Championships, held from June 21 to 30, 2024, will no doubt provide good preparation for the three local junior players taking part, as they will join six other junior players next month in the Pacific Junior Championships in Lautoka, Fiji, on July 4.
The other six juniors set to compete in the Fiji Championships include Tydeus Asalele, Jedi Leasau, Joella Ioane, Aitulagi Godinet, Pale Leasau and Alexandria Amor.
