– Nikola Šop is not on the tourist map, no tour guide mentions him. Either the tour guides do not know Nikola Šop or he does not appeal to them as a poet. It is ignored in itself. When asking who Nikola Šop is today, one can say that he is the character on the 100 km banknote. People know little about his work, said Radoslav Tokić, chairman of the Jajce “Napredak” branch, in an interview with Fena.
Tokić pointed out that the birthplace of Nicola Thorpe is owned by the city of Jajce and is a municipal monument. HKD “Napredak” Jajce has obtained the right to use it, but it needs to renew the use contract. According to Tokić, the house was partially renovated in 2004 when the poet’s 100th birthday was celebrated.
– Then, a bust was placed in front of the house, the work of Stjepan Sikirica. Tokić stressed that this is the only bust that was not a bust of a fallen soldier and was placed in Jajce after the war.
He stated that they wanted to renovate the house, but the lack of financial resources did not allow them to do so. In addition, the fact that it was not owned but for use did not allow them to take concrete measures.
Therefore, fans of Nicholas Thorpe’s work can only see his rooms when visiting the poet’s birthplace.
– The memorial room is decorated in memory of Nicola Thorpe. We have some of his poems, his hat and a stick that his grandson Adrian gave to “Progress”. Adrian planned to donate all the furniture from the apartment where Thorpe lived in Zagreb, but it would not fit into the space of the house, Tokić said.
When it comes to the cultural map of the city and related to the memory of Nikola Shope, there is the manifestation “Days of Priva Shope”, which brings together poets not only from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also from other places.
Tokić said that in recent years the event had become somewhat of a local novelty. He said that they wanted to take it to a higher level again and that this year, in celebration of the 120th anniversary of Nicola Thorpe’s birth, the “Napredak” branch in Jajce announced the competition for the 2023 “Nikla Thorpe” Literary Award. Anyone who has published a collection of poetry in 2023 can apply for the competition until September 1. The prize will consist of a plaque and a cash prize and will be awarded at a literary dinner as part of the “Shop Day on Pliva” event in Jajce in early October.
Tina Laco, assistant professor and professor of literature at the University of Mostar, who is involved in the implementation of the Future Poetry Prize “Nikolaj Thorpe”, said that the creation of the award was due to one of the few poets who, unfortunately, never received the award. They are talked about with the hyperbole they deserve. According to Laco, she also reminds people of the need to rediscover a lyric poet, whose silent advance in the poetic universe needs to be heard.
– “Pray for a Happy Death” Nicola Thorpe ends with “Oh God / Let them go into the grass at midnight / Hide / Fireflies and burn for my soul for a long time”. It seems to me that all of us who love and enjoy reading Nicola Thorpe are exactly those fireflies he prays for, silently and almost imperceptibly sustaining his soul, just like the way this poet lived and created. We have waited too long for a literary prize with the first and last name of the author who invited us into a different, more humble and more compassionate spirituality, whose poetry followed the path from astral heights to inner existence, and who gave us the richness of passionate songs written by Catullus, Propertius and Tibullus. Tina Laco emphasizes that in addition to the “Thorpe Day” in the poet’s birthplace, it is hoped that the literary prize named after Nicola Thorpe will serve as both an inspiration and a motivation.
