Togo leads the way, accounting for 27.4% of Benin product sales in the sub-regional economic zone. Cotton fabrics, cellulose wadding, as well as oil cakes and other solid residues are the main goods exported to Togo. Their sales in the quarter were 1.1 billion CFA francs, 600 million CFA francs and 500 million CFA francs, respectively, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Demography of Benin (INStaD).
Burkina Faso was second, accounting for 24% of Benin’s product sales. Cotton seeds, electrical equipment for explosive or internal combustion engines and vehicles, and pharmaceuticals were the main commodities exported to the country. These goods were sold for 3.4 billion CFA francs, 100 million CFA francs, and 100 million CFA francs, respectively.
Mali ranked third in the quarter, accounting for 22.1% of Benin’s product sales. Cottonseed (3.3 billion FCFA), petroleum or bituminous mineral oils (0.2 billion FCFA), any other fruit or vegetable juice (41.3 million FCFA) constituted the main products sold in Benin.
In the first quarter of 2024, Côte d’Ivoire became Benin’s fourth largest trading partner, accounting for 7.1% of the country’s sales. Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Liberia and Selaron are the five countries in the ECOWAS region that did not maintain commercial relations with Benin in the first three months of this year.
