The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources said that so far, 200 fishing vessels have been registered on the fishermen’s register.
A national register of fishermen is being prepared to identify fishermen engaged in income-generating activities acceptable to the State (among other activities).
The National Register of Fishermen was compiled by President Mohamed Muhidzukic as a presidential undertaking. The register was launched on February 16, 2013. The register was launched on February 16, in a ceremony held by the Commando.
One of the main purposes of the register is to ensure that fishermen, who are defined as professional occupations, are engaged in income-generating occupations recognized by the State like other occupations.
Director General of Fisheries and Marine Resources Dr. Hussein Sinan said the ministry’s main goal is to have all fishing vessels on the register. He said work is currently underway to find a simple system for vehicles registered in the register to access schemes at banks and state-owned companies.
Southwest said those listed on the register can apply for loans from the government and that the main purpose of the register is to find environmental solutions for the fishing industry.
“Around 470 vessels have obtained fishing licenses. Around 200 vessels have entered our register. So, we are looking at registering as many vessels as possible through the system,” said Dr. Hussein Sinnan.
The Fisheries Department said compiling a register of fishermen would help prevent the outflow of funds out of Sri Lanka due to foreigners’ participation in the industry.
In line with the commitment of this government, the Fisheries Department will arrange for a national register of fishermen and farm fisheries information such as fish catch, recreational fishing and sport fishing activities.
