German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced during a meeting with his French and Polish counterparts in Paris on June 24 that the three countries intend to form a coalition of European countries to develop long-range weapons, AFP quoted him as saying.

Pistorius said that “long-range weapons are a serious gap in Europe” and therefore ahead of the NATO summit in July, Berlin, Warsaw and Paris intend to agree to “close this gap” in the medium and long term.

Germany’s defense minister said a corresponding declaration of intent could be signed at the NATO summit in the United States, which would be “a clear sign of our willingness to assume responsibility.”

“We will demonstrate in Washington how strong and safe the European engagement is,” Pistorius stressed.

Germany, Poland and France cooperated in the so-called Weimar Triangle.

In February, the two leaders confirmed their willingness to coordinate efforts to meet Ukraine’s urgent needs for military and defense equipment.

In April, foreign ministers from the three countries said NATO’s European allies should take greater responsibility for the continent’s defense.
