With the start of the new school year today, Khedhufushi Municipal Council Mayor Mohammad Atif today visited the city’s public schools as he does in previous years.
The city council said the mayor would meet with the principals of the three schools to explain the schools’ progress and current challenges and wish them a happy new academic year.
There are three public schools in Khedhufushi: Jalal Uddin School, Afifuddin School and Had. This year there are 2,874 students enrolled in the Atoll Education Centre.
The city council said the mayor’s visit showed that the school had enough teachers and there was no difficulty in purchasing books for students.
“Currently, the biggest challenge facing the three schools is the lack of space and the structural development projects initiated by the Ministry of Education to address this issue in the schools have stalled, which is a matter of serious concern,” the council said.
Today more than 96,000 students will be enrolled in public and private schools in Sri Lanka.
