Over the past few hundred years, the world has advanced beyond all recognition, but not all places are connected to modern civilization. One of them is Zhongdong Village in Jizhou Province, China: it is located in a remote mountain range with beautiful scenery, but lacks the services and comforts brought by progress. It is a settlement hidden in a huge abyss 230 meters deep at the top of a mountain 1,800 meters above sea level, and the residents are reluctant to leave.
This natural cave is home to 18 families, about 100 people. The only way to reach this isolated settlement is by a tedious hike through the mountains. For 70 years, the villagers have led a simple life, cooking with fire and living in bamboo houses.
