Lettuce is a very healthy vegetableand some say it’s delicious too. But one of the known problems with lettuce is that it doesn’t keep fresh for long. Many times, lettuce comes pre-packed with a lot of leaves, half or even more of which are not used, and eventually become stale and unusable within a few days before we even think about using them again.
Lettuce is a particularly sensitive vegetable that only tastes good when it’s super fresh, crisp, green and full of life. Otherwise, it’s just not worth it. Yet the beloved vegetable is notorious for going bad quickly, meaning that most of what we buy ends up being thrown away – even if it’s kept in the fridge. But now a Korean chef and internet star living in the US, known as “Mr. Rice” came up with a simple trick for keeping lettuce fresh — one he learned from his grandmother.
What’s the trick? Well, his method involves cutting off the stems of the lettuce, soaking a paper towel in an alcoholic beverage (he suggests rum or soju, but he says any other alcoholic beverage will work), then taping the alcohol-soaked paper towel to the base of the lettuce, then storing it in a sealed bag in the refrigerator.
