Despite being married to Princess Vrinda Devi, the prince was mesmerized by Stella’s beauty and charm. Their secret affair caused a scandal within the royal family, and Stella was eventually crowned Queen after a fierce struggle, despite her family’s objections.
Paramjit’s father, Maharaja Jagatjit Singh, strongly opposed their union, despite having once married a foreign dancer himself. Stella was banned from the palace and lived in “Stella Cottage” outside Kapurthala. However, political pressure forced Paramjit to marry a Rajput princess, which would benefit him politically, but his heart still belonged to Stella.
Their love endured, and in 1937, Stella and Paramjit married in a Sikh gurdwara in England, defying social norms, with Stella changing her name to Narinder Kaur. However, their happiness was short-lived. After Maharaja Paramjit’s death in 1955, Stella’s reputation was tarnished due to her alleged embezzlement of royal wealth, and she was exiled from the palace and subsequently went into exile in Shimla.
Stella’s later years were plagued by loneliness and financial intrigue, with rumors of hidden wealth in foreign banks adding to her mystique. In 1984, Stella died in Delhi, injured in a drunken fall, a tragic end to her turbulent life.
Today, Stella’s grave lies in disrepair, a poignant symbol of a life that was once filled with both glamour and scandal, now forgotten by many. Despite her fame, her legacy remains shrouded in mystery, with questions about her alleged wealth and the truth behind her turbulent life remaining unanswered.
