The national team faced Uruguay at the National Stadium, but failed to achieve a draw (0-0). This match was a great opportunity for both teams to test their players and tactical issues.

It was clear that this was going to be a game of high pace and determination, just like the one against Uruguay. In that sense, it did not disappoint. Of course, it was Costa Rica who played the better game throughout the match.
The Charruas were a little timid in their attempts from long range, but little else. For their part, Nacional did knock on the door with more danger. In the 21st minute, Orlando Gallo connected with a header in the box but his shot went wide of the post.
Lacelle’s offensive intentions were clear, mainly because Alvaro Zamora was knocked down in the penalty area and took a penalty kick in the 44th minute. It was captain Francisco Calvo who fired the ball, but the shot went wide. The marker did not move.
Offensive clarity was not a strength for either team over the next 45 minutes. Again, Costa Rica found the better scoring options, albeit few and far between.
The most obvious addition came in the 85th minute, when Orlando Gallo reappeared. He joined the attack again and almost scored with a deflected header. The ball hit the post.
Lacelle continued to search for the winning goal in the final minutes and came close to achieving it. The last gasp was Jefferson Brenes who took a “taquito” inside the penalty area, but the Uruguayan defense knew how to cope well. No goal.
What’s next for La Celle?
The next challenge for the team led by Gustavo Alfaro will be at the National Stadium on Thursday, June 6. The match will be against St. Kitts and Nevis at the start of the World Cup qualifiers.
