The iconic Rakaia Salmon is in need of a facelift – and money is needed to fund it.
The iconic large salmon farm, Rakaia Salmon, is in need of refurbishment and funds are needed to support the refurbishment.
Ashburton District Council open spaces manager Ian Soper said structural and maintenance assessments showed the 12-metre-high statue required extensive work.
The good news, he said, is that the work can be done on site.
“This work can be done on site so there is no felling and hauling required.”
He said scaffolding needed to be erected and wrapped in plastic to contain the fiberglass parts.
The upgrade is not budgeted and once quotes are received a report will be submitted to the council “to understand its financial status”.
The statue was built in 1991 with funds from the Lakaya Lions Club and was presented to the city council about 18 years ago.
Between 2020 and 2021, the area around the salmon was redeveloped.
The project received $739,945 in funding from the Tourism Infrastructure Fund, $20,000 from the Rakaia Lions and the remaining $198,000 from the council. The bulk of the project budget was spent on building new public toilets.
