The ruling and opposition parties have almost reached a consensus and are preparing to set up a parliamentary committee tomorrow

Kathmandu, June 14. It is almost certain that a parliamentary committee will be set up to investigate the misappropriation of cooperative funds by the Gorkha Media Network. Leaders say that with the formation of the committee tomorrow, the parliamentary hurdle will be removed.

The ruling party agreed on May 5 to set up a parliamentary committee to conduct an investigation after the main opposition Nepali Congress party continued to obstruct parliament by saying that Ramichani had stopped the investigation after assuming office as interior minister.

But no agreement could be reached on the terms of reference (TOR) for the parliamentary committee. The dispute over whether to retain the name of Home Minister Ramichani or the post of Gorkha Media Managing Director continues.

Amid shouts and slogans from MPs, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda held a vote of confidence on June 7 and the government’s policies and plans were approved by majority on Sunday. There is a budget speech tomorrow at 1 o’clock.

Earlier, the three parties held a meeting on Monday morning to try to reach an agreement, and in the afternoon, Congress officials held a meeting. In the evening, the leaders of the three parties held a discussion for nearly three hours. The leaders said that the meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar almost reached an agreement.

“An agreement has been reached,” Law Minister Padam Giri said after the meeting. “A probe committee will be set up tomorrow and a mandate will be issued.”

Congress whip Ramesh Ukhtar also claimed that a deal would be reached tomorrow (Tuesday). “We are result-oriented. Tomorrow, we will meet the working group and finalize it,” he said.

According to sources, the name of Gorkha Media Network will appear in the parliamentary committee’s mandate along with other cooperatives like Suryadarshan in Pokhara, Sahara in Chitwan, Supreme in Butwal and others.

The name of Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ramichani or his position as managing director of Gorkha Media will not be mentioned. But the practice of investigating people doing illegal work through Gorkha Media will be mentioned.

Law Minister Giri also said that no one’s name will be mentioned in the mandate of the parliamentary committee. They have said from the beginning that the parliamentary committee should not be formed in a way that names of individuals are mentioned and the main opposition party is also flexible on this, saying: “The name of a certain company is mentioned. If anyone has committed an infringement, then anyone will be investigated. If he is guilty, he should be included in the proceedings.”

The working group will finalise the agenda tomorrow at 11 am. The parliamentary committee, which will have three months, will comprise two members each from the Congress and the UML and one member each from the Maoists, the RASWPA and the Patriotic Janata Party.
