Roseau, Dominica (TDN)
On May 9, 2016, the Investigative Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) will release what could be the largest release ever of information about secretive offshore companies and the people behind them, based on data from its Panama Papers investigation. The information includes information on more than 68 companies whose owners are from the Dominican Republic. The searchable database will contain information on more than 200,000 companies, trusts, foundations and funds established in 21 tax havens, from Hong Kong to Nevada in the United States. The data is expected to reveal the beneficial owners of registered companies. The upcoming release is the next step in ICIJ’s year-long investigation into secretive dealings in offshore tax havens. “Since the revelations first broke, they have sent shockwaves around the world, leading to the resignations of several high-ranking officials, including the Prime Minister of Iceland; sparking official investigations in several countries; and pressuring world leaders and other politicians, such as British Prime Minister David Cameron, to explain their ties to offshore companies,” the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists said in a press release.
It also “has sparked a new sense of urgency among lawmakers and regulators to close loopholes and make public information about shell company owners.”
