Another part of the great project around the Genoa Levante waterfront is taking shape in the name of Made in Italy innovation. By the end of this month, the new Piloti Tower, designed by Renzo Piano in the Port of Genoa, will be equipped with an innovative system for the active suppression of wind-induced vibrations, which will make it unique in terms of safety and stability.

The system was created by Isaac, a Milanese company specialized in the design and production of anti-seismic systems, founded in 2018 from the idea of ​​Alberto Bussini, then a graduate of the Engineering Department of the Milan Polytechnic, and which has become a global leader in anti-seismic systems. Isaac is the first company in Europe to obtain a patent for a technology that works exclusively on existing buildings, without the need for structural and invasive interventions. On Wednesday, the system will be installed on the “top” of the tower, which will be 65 meters high and have a surface area of ​​800 square meters. Unlike systems such as the seismic ball of the Taipei 101 skyscraper in Taiwan, which weighs 660 tons and is installed inside the building, Isaac’s innovation uses a combination of machines (active mass dampers) installed on the building – in this case at the top of the tower and electric motors that accelerate it to supercar speeds (accelerating to 100 km/h in 1.4 seconds) to balance the movement of the structure and eliminate vibrations, thus reducing structural stress.

The solution can be applied to any type of building, from apartments to offices, from schools to hospitals, and 15 systems have been installed in Italy.

The next step is to test the solution on historic buildings. Tomorrow, at the Eucentre Foundation in Pavia, the effectiveness of the Electro Pro system will be tested on the 12-meter-high masonry bell tower rebuilt inside the center, paired with the Mapei anti-seismic system. According to an analysis conducted by the Gea-Green Economy Agency and the National Engineers Council Research Center, Italy has spent about 122 billion euros on the necessary reconstruction after eight major seismic events since 1968 (the Belice earthquake), not counting smaller ones. To see how effective a system like Isaac can be, the first version of the technology was tested with the Irpinia 6.9 magnitude earthquake as a reference, showing a 57% increase in stability and, on the third floor of the test building, a response intensity greater than 100% of the shocks of the Irpinia earthquake. The Electro Pro system is its evolution: the reduced size (more than 1/5 of the mass and about 1/3 of the surface area) makes it easier to install.

The cost of each machine (inertial axis) starts from 70,000 euros: a medium-sized building from the 1960s-1970s, located in an area with moderate seismic activity, requires between 4 and 12 machines. Everything starts within a few weeks. The latest installation, on a school building, took less than two months.
