Britain’s new foreign secretary has reiterated that the new Labour government in London will defend Gibraltar’s sovereignty.
David Lammy said in a phone call with First Minister Fabian Picardo that the UK would “double lock” Gibraltar’s sovereignty.
Lamy also agreed to restart Brexit negotiations with Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Alvarez “as soon as possible”.
They agreed to meet during this week’s NATO summit in Washington to further advance the negotiations.

Meanwhile, Gibraltar’s Chief Minister is optimistic that the first-ever “ideological unity” between the Socialist governments in London, Madrid and Gibraltar “will undoubtedly help us in our work”.
That sentiment was echoed by Hugh Elliott, the British ambassador to Spain, who said he expected a deal between the two countries to be reached “soon.”
He predicted that the agreement would be a win-win-win for all parties involved and create a good environment for further agreements on Gibraltar.
Elliott also confirmed that a meeting was likely to take place between Spanish President Pedro Sanchez and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as well as the two countries’ defense ministers.
If the meeting does not take place in Washington, it will most likely take place in Blenheim, England, during the European Political Community meeting next week.
