President Ranil Wickremesinghe stressed that an advanced education system combined with modern technology is necessary to drive the country’s new economy forward. He noted that education reforms are currently underway to achieve this goal.
President Rani Wickremesinghe made the remarks at a ceremony held at Hall De Galle in Galle today (06). The ceremony marked a major step in the modernization of education by providing 200 smart classrooms and 2,000 tablets to 200 schools in the Southern Province.
At the request of Health and Industry Minister Dr Ramesh Pathirana, the Indian government allocated Rs 30 crore to the Southern Provincial Council for the project.
Of the 200 schools selected, 150 are located in Galle district and the remaining 50 are in Hambantota and Matara districts.
In addition, 2000 tags were distributed, with 200 classrooms receiving 10 tags each.
To mark the occasion, President Ranil Wickremesinghe presented a commemorative gift to Indian High Commissioner Mr. Santosh Jha.
In further remarks, President Wickremesinghe said:
“Currently, the world is developing at a rapid pace with modern technology. Therefore, our country’s education system must also keep pace with the times. The Ministry of Education has initiated the necessary education reforms to achieve this goal.
We have introduced many timely education policies in the past, but with the rapid advancement of technology, the education sector urgently needs reform to ensure that the education system meets the needs of the times and is effective.
We have already initiated the establishment of AI clubs in schools. Countries such as the UK and the US started integrating AI technologies a few years ago. To ensure the sustainability of our new AI initiatives launched this year, it is vital that teachers receive comprehensive training. The government is actively developing training programs and infrastructure to support this initiative. There is also a plan to upgrade existing central colleges and national schools into specialized institutions focused on AI.
We are very grateful to our neighbor India for its support in promoting modern science and technology. We highly appreciate Prime Minister Modi’s interest in establishing a branch of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Sri Lanka.
In addition, negotiations with India to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector are progressing smoothly. I had discussions with Mr. Musk in Malaysia, and his Internet technology is expected to be introduced to Sri Lanka after obtaining parliamentary approval.
This development will help provide technical education to students in remote areas. Currently, the Southern Province has become a region that showcases excellent educational talents. Today, the first Dutch school in the Southern Province has developed into Badgama National School.
By leveraging modern technology to raise a future-ready generation, we aim to position our country as a global leader.
