AAfter Kyle Chad Raheem Archer and Jamal Darnell Motley’s plan to get money from mail carrier Basil Springer failed, they stabbed Basil Springer with a knife and threw him into a well.
The facts were revealed when Chief State Counsel Oliver Thomas read Archer’s statement to police to Justice Randall Worrell in the Supreme Court’s Second Courtroom.
Archer, 30, a well digger from Bayview Avenue in Bayville, St Michael, and Mottley, 36, a cleaner from Lower Dayrells Road in Christ Church, admitted murdering Springer, 62, between March 5 and 11, 2020.
Archer told police that Motley contacted him and told him he knew where to get a large sum of money – from a man who lived nearby and brought Jamaican women with him and lots of cash.
The two men were given Springer’s phone number and included the two women in their plan.
“Our plan was that the two women would call the man and when he came to them, we would rob him. Things did not go as planned and he ended up in my hands,” the statement read.
Motley had already arrived at the home, and the two women and Springer went into the bedroom, where Motley lunged at the man.
“I walked up and grabbed him. By this time, the women had left. Motley then tackled the man to the ground, made him lie prone on the ground, and tied his hands behind his back,” Archer continued.
They made Springer sit on the bed, put a sheet over his head and began to question him about who was at his house. Then they forced him to call his brother and tell him that a woman was coming to collect his bank card and some money.
Archer drove Springer’s car, picked up the two women, and took them to Springer’s residence. One of the women went to Springer’s house, but returned a few minutes later and said Springer’s brother asked why he couldn’t go get his own things. They drove away, and Archer dropped the two women off at his home, then told Motley that the plan had failed again. Motley forced Springer to call his brother again, and Springer kept asking him if he was okay and if he was going to call the police.
Motley and Archer’s men then discussed their next steps.
“I did want this man out of my house and I let Motley know he had to let this man go. Motley let me know it was jail. I told him I wasn’t worried about that part, I just wanted this man out,” Archer told police.
He added that when he got a knife from the kitchen to cut the cable ties holding Springer, Motley stopped him and told him to take Springer out of the house and put him in a dark area. They took him to an area on Culloden Road, took him out of the car and laid him on the ground, where Motley tried to suffocate him but was unsuccessful. Springer kept telling them he would not call the police.
Archer said he stabbed Springer in the neck four times and walked away after Motley continued to provoke him.
“I was convinced that Basil was still alive… I wanted Motley to think that if I could inflict some kind of harm on this man, he would come over and we could go on about our business. Instead, Motley grabbed Basil and threw him headfirst into the well,” the statement continued.
Archer then drove the car to George Street and parked it before walking home with Motley.
In an interview with police, Motley said Archer drove the car to a stop not far from the well, then removed the wooden board covering the well, and together they put Springer into the well and covered it.
According to the autopsy report, the cause of death was determined to be strangulation.
Archer’s defence counsel was Sian Lange, while Mottley’s defence team consisted of Dr Lenda Blackman and Simon Clarke.
The case was adjourned to September 16, when sentencing submissions from both the prosecution and defence will be heard.
