The Liberal Initiative (IL) has been growing over the last few years. This is something that cannot be denied. The party led by Rui Rocha has already consolidated its influence in Portugal and is now starting to take its first steps in Europe. With the recent National Congress, it became clear to everyone that the Liberal Initiative is not a perfect party. However, he has every reason to smile. Because it shows the country that having differences within the party is a good thing, a good thing! Therefore, as one of the newest members of the Liberal Initiative, I have to admit that I was surprised for several reasons. The following four points make me believe that the growth of IL is almost guaranteed, if not inevitable.
1. Disagreement in the Freedom Initiative Charter is a Good Sign
Contrary to many people mediaeven members of the Liberal Initiative say, I think the recent split in the Liberal Initiative statutes is a good sign. It shows that the party members want to see the party continue to grow. Some see it one way, others another. However, the goal is the same. To spread the liberal ideology to our Portugal. In fact, I dare say that if they look at the candidate statutes”More freedom”, they can perfectly create a new party. The main ideology will continue. In other words, this shows us that the ideas within the party itself are different. But with the same common goals.
Despite several media mentioning that there is restlessness within the party, to be honest, I don’t feel that way. In fact, I had the opportunity to discuss with members of the different candidates and it was one of the most fruitful conversations I have ever seen in politics. You could make a podcast out of it and I’m sure it would be successful in the liberal world. It’s good to disagree. Unlike some Portuguese parties, the word of the “king” is what counts. In the liberal initiative, there is room for new ideas and new ways of thinking. One thing is for sure, everyone agrees that the regulations should be changed (or improved). Unfortunately, this is not the case.
2. A clear desire to change the face of Portugal
This has seemed obvious for a long time, but this National Congress of the Freedom Initiative brings us a more concrete statement. In Rui Rocha’s second speech, the clear target audience was the Portuguese people. Our current government is still incapable of solving the problems. Even if these were created by the previous government.
Despite the short time, the lack of ideas and (certainly) lack of will to address these issues seems evident. The Liberal Initiative has only benefited from the Democratic Alliance’s recent inability to act. The IL message continues to spread, and the Portuguese increasingly see possible solutions (which I will discuss below) as viable.
Being my first national convention, I can safely say that all the members I met had a clear idea that a Liberty Initiative government could at least alleviate the major problems of this country.
3. Ideas that seem radical to those who don’t want to understand them
Honestly, I really can’t understand any Portuguese problem when IL mentions the word “less state”. After all, the saying of all Portuguese cafes is “they are all the same”. So, let’s change the perception. Let’s do something different. Let’s privatize what should be privatized. Let’s reduce the cost of the state and improve people’s lives by creating jobs for the private sector and the opportunity for a prosperous economy.
If privatizing TAP was a radical idea not long ago, it is not today. It took the government almost a referendum to realize that people are tired of an airline that offers Portuguese people worse service than the Irish low-cost airlines. There are obvious problems with hospitals and education. The solution of the Freedom Initiative is a complete overhaul of these sectors. It will not be done in a year or two, it is true, but it is necessary. The Portuguese should be free to choose where they want their children to go to school, regardless of their postcode. 4. Freedom Initiative continues to look to the future
Finally, the Freedom Initiative mentions and shows that it looks to the future. Ideas are not achieved overnight. However, the Portuguese are beginning to get tired of the government’s talk about management. At some point, it reminds us of the speeches of failed coaches at the end of a game. In other words, “We must improve”, “It’s the referee’s fault”. It’s time for us to take responsibility.
In short, the country has been led by them since April 25, 1974. Since then, we have fallen to the bottom in all statistics. One thing is certain, we all know (deep down) that Portugal will soon change. Whether we will have a liberal initiative that will keep up and continue to develop remains to be seen. Everything indicates yes!
