The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) filed 18 clustering requests with San Salvador’s Third Court against Organized Crime. These requests call for a total of 1,660 gang members spread across different “courts” or operational areas to be tried in the same criminal process.
According to the FGR, the suspects are mainly active in the departments of Cabanas and Cuscatlán. The tax offices of Cojutepec and Ilobasco submitted documents grouping the gang members according to their respective spheres of influence.
The data shows that 1,298 gang members from Cojutepec and 362 from Ilobasco will face charges of illegal association, aggravated homicide, commodity smuggling, and illegal possession of weapons and drugs. The diversity of crimes highlights the complexity and severity of criminal activities in these areas.
This measure is supported by Legislative Decree No. 803, which establishes special transitional provisions ordering the processing of defendants detained during the state of emergency, thereby allowing for collective trials based on gang structures. The strategy aims to maximize the effectiveness of the justice system and ensure that those responsible for serious crimes are duly prosecuted and punished.
