televisionThe inaugural Barbados International Draughts Open was held at the All Souls Church Hall in Bank Hall on Monday evening. The inaugural tournament attracted a player from the United States, Eric Strange. However, the visitor got off to a bad start as he lost 0-2 early on to experienced chess grandmaster and former world champion Ronald ‘Suki’ King, who was in excellent form.
Former national champion Richard Glazette also got off to a good start, defeating Eddie Moore 2-0. Talented player Julian Burgess also defeated Wilfred Frederick 2-0.
Defending champion Jack Francis defeated Trevor Howell 1-0 to start his title defense. The rest of the players ended in a draw.
The second round saw two local grandmasters and old rivals, Ronald ‘Suki’ King and Richard Grazette, face off, but neither player took any risks, resulting in only two draws.
Hamilton King defeated Colin Price 1-0 and Trevor Howell defeated American Eric Strange 1-0. The American has had a tougher time than he expected against the locals so far and will be looking to get a win on day two.
In-form Julian Burgess defeated Richard Glazette 1-0 to end the night with seven points and lead the standings, with Suki one point behind.
