DÜSSELDORF, Germany: Spain were in near total control against Georgia at Euro 2024 on Sunday and now look forward to their quarter-final against Germany with confidence, coach Luis De La Fuente said.
Spain conceded a goal but beat Georgia 4-1 in the last 16 at the Düsseldorf Stadium on Sunday and was praised by his coach for his efficient performance.
“I think we controlled the game throughout, the opponent defended very well, counterattacked very well, and we played a great game.”
“We need to put the importance of this win in perspective because we played against a very good team,” De La Fuente told a news conference.
Spain trailed when centre-back Robin Le Normand turned Otar Kakabadze’s bouncing cross into his own net, but the sides levelled at half-time and dominated the rest of the half.
“We knew Georgia’s danger came from transitions and counterattacks, but they didn’t have any shots on goal,” De La Fuente added.
“Of course, when they scored we were a bit nervous for a while, but we created a lot of chances and the result could have been 8-1.”
Spain will face host Germany in the quarter-finals in Stuttgart on Friday.
“We are confident, we have a talented, strong and dedicated team. It is important to believe in your abilities. I don’t want to offend anyone, but our team is the best in this tournament,” said De La Fuente.
“Germany are a fantastic team, they have the best players in the world and they are very organised and disciplined. But they will face a team very similar to them, very committed, well organised, difficult to beat, full of fighting spirit and high ambition.
“I know it’s something that’s often said, but in football, details make or break the game and the outcome,” he added.
