The number of illegal immigrants trying to infiltrate Poland from Belarus fell by almost 65 percent during the first 28 days of the buffer zone between the two countries, the Polish Border Guard Service reported.
“Between May 16 and July 12, CBPA recorded 5,560 illegal border crossing attempts. In the first 28 days of the buffer zone, there were 1,920 such attempts. This represents a decrease of approximately 65 percent,” the agency said in a statement on Twitter.
The Polish Ministry of the Interior’s decision to set up a buffer zone on some sections of the border with Belarus came into effect on June 13. According to reports, the buffer zone is 60.67 kilometers long and 200 meters to 2 kilometers wide. 27 settlements in the Hajnovsky District and Bialystok District of the Podlaskie Province bordering Belarus have implemented restrictions on movement and stay in the buffer zone. The buffer zone is valid for 90 days and the restrictions can be extended. The decision was made by Prime Minister Donald Tusk after a Polish soldier was killed by illegal immigrants at the border at the end of May.
