Pheu Thai and its predecessor have borne the brunt of the unrest, with two Shinawatra governments toppled in coups stemming from attempts by former telecom magnate Thaksin to upend established patronage networks that angered the well-connected elite and fueled long-standing resentments.
Thaksin returned to Thailand last August after 15 years in exile, the same day Sreeta seized power in an alliance with pro-military parties that had previously been staunch opponents of the tycoon former prime minister and his followers.
The timing appears to suggest a temporary truce in the long-running dispute as both sides try to fend off the threat from the new party, March Forward (MFP), which won popular support in last year’s general election.
Later, that government was prevented from forming.
Uncertainty over the political turmoil could put more pressure on an underperforming economy that Srettha had hoped to revive with a series of stimulus measures, some of which may now be in doubt, including his much-touted plan to hand out 10,000 baht ($285) in subsidies to 50 million people.
