Ten outstanding students have been given a valuable head start on their secondary school journey through the latest scholarships from the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA) Tourism Industry Enhancement Fund (TEF).
The Irene Paul Scholarship Fund was established on October 11, 2021 to provide financial support to secondary school students whose parents work in the tourism industry. The scholarship is named in honor of Irene Paul, a core figure in SLHTA who served the organization for more than four decades.
Scholarship recipients will receive EC$2,000 per year for 5 years once they maintain a grade point average of 70%.
This year’s winners were honored during a ceremony on Friday, August 16, 2024 at Sandals Grande St. Lucian.

– Viniah Louis: Soufriere Comprehensive High School
– Arabella Charles: St. Joseph’s Monastery
– Izzabella Frederick: Hong Kong Trade Middle School
– Javaun William: Leon Hess Comprehensive High School and
– Tina Brown: St. Joseph’s Monastery
Donette Ismael, SLHTA’s TEF Program Manager, gets excited about this time of year. Ismael said, “Eileen Paul always wanted to create a scholarship program for frontline team members, core team members, who otherwise wouldn’t have these opportunities. To get our scholarships, the child must have a grade point average of 70 and above. Our program officer, Ms. Amos, loves working with people, so she always follows up with all of our winners. We follow up with them, meet with the parents, meet with the student. Even if the child may not be able to maintain their grade point average, we always ask and work with the family to find out why and how we as SLHTA can help the student and retain them.”
