Pavel Durow, the head of the messaging service Telegram, was arrested in Paris and remains in police custody. On Sunday evening, the investigating judge decided to extend his detention for questioning. The detention can last up to 96 hours. The judge must then decide whether to release Durov or initiate an investigation.
The 39-year-old was reportedly arrested in Paris on Saturday. An arrest warrant was issued in connection with a preliminary investigation into him, charging him with fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organized crime and promoting terrorism, among other charges. The Russians are accused of not doing enough to prevent Telegram from being used for criminal purposes. Telegram said Durov, who holds dual Russian and French citizenship, had nothing to hide. Telegram complies with European law and content moderation on the platform is “industry standard.” It is absurd to blame the platform or its bosses for abuses.
