Amid the backdrop of significant challenges faced by the textile and apparel industry in understanding and calculating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and setting appropriate reduction targets, the Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) on Thursday organised a workshop on ‘Carbon Emission Monitoring and Effective Solutions’ in partnership with Fair Trade India.

The objective of the event is to reduce the carbon footprint of numerous MSMEs in Tirupur district as per global standards to achieve the Paris Agreement target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Workshop organisers said TEA will soon sign a memorandum of understanding with Fair Trade India to push MSMEs to curb carbon emissions by setting up sustainability clinics.

Anand, who is also executive member of the Sustainability Clinic, TEA and chairman of the brand and sustainability subcommittee, said 50 to 60 MSME units in Tirupur will be provided guidance and funding to incorporate sustainable practices and reduce carbon emissions through water recycling, green energy use and other eco-friendly methods.

Mr Anand explained that the EU is keen to continue importing products from Tirupur and is therefore equipping MSMEs through Fairtrade India to become carbon neutral once the restrictions (which ban imports of products without a green label) come into effect.

Abhishek Jani, CEO of Fair Trade India, along with experts, gave the participants a detailed introduction on categorizing greenhouse gas ranges, calculating strategies, setting baselines and defining targets for effective emission reduction.

Around 250 exporters attended the seminar.
