Finance Minister Betchani Tchereni has issued a qualified and unconditional apology to the people of Malawians for remarks he made during a meeting of the Malawi Economic Justice Network (MEJN) which were deemed insensitive and tantamount to executive immunity and arrogance.
The Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) and other concerned citizens plan to hold a vigil at the Treasury Department offices starting August 1.
However, during the process of notifying the District Commissioner, it was established that Tchereni had expressed his apologies and was very willing to engage with CDEDI and others.
Now, at a meeting scheduled for today (July 30, 2024), Chereni has apologized unconditionally.
We have seen a brief but powerful written apology, in which the Finance Minister acknowledged that it would have better conveyed his point of view and understood the disappointment this matter had caused.
Since then, Cherene has praised CDEDI’s progressive actions, arguing that it plays an important role in ensuring good governance, especially in the public sector.
“This is what Malawi is all about. I want to encourage all Malawians to engage in dialogue whenever appropriate on issues that affect the trajectory of our beautiful country,” he said, working towards improved communication.
The vigil was held because Cherene remained silent seven days after being asked to apologize.
