Swiatek, known as the “Queen of Clay”, said people’s expectations of her during the Olympics were too high, which made her feel very stressed.
“I actually realised yesterday that I wasn’t playing for myself, but for everybody, for the country, for my team, for all the people who want me to win a medal, even a gold,” the four-time French Open champion told reporters.
“I didn’t realize how deep it was for me or how much of a burden it weighed on me. I know I probably didn’t play my best here. I didn’t feel like I could move as naturally as I do on clay. Regardless, I’m glad I overcame it and got a bronze medal here.”
Swiatek, who won her third straight French Open title at Roland Garros last month, did not speak to the media after her loss to Zheng but opened up about her feelings a day later.
“I was probably a little too proud of myself because I thought I’d been through so much pressure before so I thought I could handle this one,” she said.
“Now I’m actually really motivated to work harder and I think I’ll be more humble.”
The final between Zheng Saisai and Croatian player Donna Vekic will be held on Saturday.
