New York: Polish world number one Iga Swiatek produced a near-flawless performance to defeat 25th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 6-2 at the US Open on Saturday to reach the last 16 for the fourth consecutive year.

The 2022 champion, who never faced a break point and made few mistakes during her match at Arthur Ashe Stadium, pumped her fist after her opponent returned the ball to match point. She next faces Lyudmila Samsonova.

“I just tried to focus on myself,” Swiatek said.

“She’s a great player, no doubt, and very strong, so you have to be ready for those first few quick shots.”

Pavlyuchenkova made two unforced errors on the final two points of the first set, allowing the three-time French Open champion to break serve, and Swiatek served for the match in the tenth game.

Swiatek carried that momentum into the second set, where she lost just three first-serve points and committed just one unforced error, breaking Pavlyuchenkova in the third and fifth games.
