The superhero drama The Boys is coming to an end with its fifth season.
The news was confirmed by series creator Eric Kripke, who will be returning this month for the Prime Video drama, which is named after a group of misfits who try to take down someone with super powers who uses them in unethical ways.
He wrote on Instagram: “Premiere week of The Boys Season 4 is a great time to announce: Season 5 will be our last!
“This was my plan all along, I just had to proceed with caution until I got final approval from Vought. So excited to bring the story to its bloody, epic, steamy climax. Watch Season 4 in two days, because the finale has already begun!”
AP AverageIn this satirical comedy, Vought International is a secretive science and PR firm that manages superheroes around the world, often using them to sell products or perform covert missions that endanger the lives of the public.
Kripke, who is also the creator of horror series Supernatural, shared a script in the post that looks like it’s from the Season 4 finale.
Most of it was removed, except for words and phrases like “we become one,” “night,” and “blackout.”
The series stars New Zealand actor and Star Trek film star Karl Urban as foul-mouthed, abrasive leader of vigilante group The Boys, and Oppenheimer actor Jack Quaid as hopeful and compassionate Hughie Campbell, who is initially reluctant to take part in the operation.
Hughie later dates superhero Starlight, whose real name is Annie January (Erin Moriarty), while Billy attempts to take down the megalomaniacal, all-powerful John Gilman/Homelander (Antony Starr), who possesses Superman-like powers and leads the incompetent and self-obsessed American Guardian group the Seven.
AP AverageThe Season 4 trailer reveals more of the confrontation between Homelander and Billy.
The series also spawned a spin-off called Gen V, which follows a group of students with super powers, but they’re also dealing with interference from Vought.
Chance Perdomo, an American actor who grew up in the UK, plays Andre Anderson, a man with the ability to control metal through magnetism, and will return for the second season.
Perdomo died in a motorcycle accident earlier this year at the age of 27, and producers previously said there would be no replacement for him in the next film.
Season 4 of The Boys premieres Thursday.
