July 15, 2024 (OMDURMAN) – Sudan’s army deputy commander-in-chief Yasir al-Atta announced on Tuesday that the armed forces will not negotiate with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) even if the conflict lasts for a century.
The statement came during indirect talks between the Sudanese government and the Rapid Rescue Team in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations, which focused on the deteriorating humanitarian situation.
Atta said at a promotion ceremony for engineering officers in Omdurman, “Even if the war lasts for 100 years, there will be no negotiations and no ceasefire.” He believes that negotiations with the Rapid Support Forces will only delay the conflict and aggravate political, military and security problems, hindering Sudan’s progress.
Atta stressed that the army is committed to continuing what he called the “battle of dignity” until the RSF fighters and their associates surrender. He rejected claims that the tribes support the RSF, insisting that no tribe would support the “devilish acts” of violence and abuse committed by the paramilitary group.
“We support the will and decision of the Sudanese people, whose interest lies in the elimination of the RSF,” Atta declared.
Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a devastating conflict between the army and the RSF, which began in the capital, Khartoum, and spread to vast areas of Darfur, Kordofan, Al Jazira, White Nile, and Sennar regions.
The escalating conflict has left countless people dead and more than 10 million displaced, with the affected population fearing impending famine due to a lack of humanitarian aid.
